Pickleball Season Is Here: A Beginner’s Guide to the Courts at Seville

|

November is one of the best months to play pickleball outdoors in San Antonio. At Seville, residents have on-site pickleball courts shaded by the community’s legacy oak trees. No membership, no drive across town, no waiting for an open court at a crowded park. If you’ve never played, it takes just a few rules and one afternoon to get hooked.

Why is everyone playing pickleball?

It’s easy to learn and genuinely social. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, pickleball was America’s fastest-growing sport for the fifth year in a row, with an estimated 24.3 million players in 2025, up 22.8% from 2024. The game isn’t just for retirees anymore either. Teens and young adults ages 13 to 24 now have the highest participation rates of any age group. sportsfacilitiesrecmanagement

For apartment residents, the appeal is simple. The courts are smaller than a tennis court, rallies are long and fun even for beginners, and a doubles game is an easy way to meet your neighbors.

What are the basic rules of pickleball?

You only need four to get started. Here’s the short version from USA Pickleball’s official rules summary:

1. Serve underhand and diagonally. Start from behind the baseline and serve cross-court to the opposite service box.

2. Follow the two-bounce rule. After the serve, the receiving team has to let the ball bounce before hitting it back, and then the serving team has to let the return bounce too. After those two bounces, everyone can volley.

3. Stay out of “the kitchen” when volleying. The non-volley zone, which everyone calls “the kitchen,” covers the 7 feet on each side of the net. You can step in there, but you can’t hit the ball out of the air while you’re in it.

4. Play to 11, win by 2. Most recreational games follow this format. Doubles is the most popular way to play.

That’s it. Everything else you’ll pick up on the court.

What do you need to start playing?

Not much. Bring a paddle, a few outdoor pickleballs (they’re harder and have smaller holes than indoor balls), court shoes with good lateral support, and water. Beginner paddle sets with two paddles and a few balls are widely available and affordable. With Parcel Pending package lockers, your order will be waiting whenever you get home, with no need to catch the office during business hours.

Seville tip: Not sure about buying gear yet? Ask a neighbor to borrow a paddle for your first game. Most players are happy to recruit a new partner.

When is the best time to play in San Antonio?

November afternoons and early evenings are ideal. After a long summer, the courts are finally comfortable well past lunchtime. The tree canopy around the community adds shade on sunny days. Check with the leasing office about court hours and any guidelines before you head out.

Make a Day of It

Pickleball pairs well with everything else at Seville. Grab a coffee at the clubhouse coffee bar before a morning match. After an afternoon game, fire up one of the two BBQ areas for a post-game cookout. Bring your pup out to the dog park, and finish with a stop at the dog washing station if things got muddy. When the evenings cool down, homes with a fireplace make for a cozy night in. See which floor plans include one.
